i. RESEARCH PRESENTATION

-Reference mood board
I am unfamiliar with photo manipulation so Pinterest is a good place for me to search for references to grasp the idea.

- Idea summary
Firstly, I look at the form, the shape of the object. If it is a cylindrical object, then I would manipulate it with another object with a cylindrical form. This allows a smooth transition of the overall look of the manipulated object. However, it is not a strict guide that I am following.

Secondly, I will match two objects with no relevance at all. This is to surprise the viewers with the unexpected. Lastly, I will find objects around me that I can easily take a photograph of.
- Sketches

Sketch #1
I chose to have 2 objects with the same form as I think it would be easier for me to make a smooth manipulation. One is a battery, and the other is my favourite ink pen.

Sketch #2
I saw a half-used superglue on my table and thought what if it does not squirts out glue, instead, it squirts out a ray of light?

Sketch #3
My mom was buying apples frequently lately and there is a masking tape I bought. I thought instead of tape, what if it is apple skin.

ii. MOCK UP
I used 2 different sizes of flashlights to see which has the ray of light suitable for my idea. I also shined them from different angles. The superglue was positioned in front of an object to create depth. If I just put a superglue in front of a black background, it would appear floating in the void and I do not want that look.

Decided on this photo as the base photo for editing. The light glare at the right was created using the flashlight. The air dryer is merely acting as a prop in the background so the superglue will not appear floating in the void.

Then, I imported the ray of lights from the flashlight and played with different layer modes to get the result I want.

The last round would be adding lighting effects to ensure everything looks cohesive in the same photo, I added a vignette using brush strokes in multiply mode as well as some coloured light glare using screen mode.

Something felt off and I noticed it is the shadow.

To mimic the night sky in astrophotography, stars were added. Light blue stars royalty-free image taken from Beautiful Png vectors by Lovepik.com

iii. Final Submission

I tried to mimic the feeling I get when looking at astrophotography, how some people shine a flashlight into the dark sky but are surrounded by the twinkling stars and whatnot. In the end, this is just me playing with the prompt I made for myself: ‘Superglue squirting light’.

FEEDBACK

Week 11
You may proceed with your idea. During the manipulation stage add some stars to mimic the outer-sky feel.

Week 10
Sketch# 2 is kinda cool. You may proceed with the idea.

REFLECTION

Project 2C was a light-hearted project I guess. I enjoyed looking at my peers' wild ideas and getting entertained by their work. This project helped me to generate ideas in a way I am not used to, which is in the realm of surrealism. Overall, I will try to bring this creative juice over to my last project.
