Topic 3 -:
[Unity/ Harmony/ Symbol/ Word and Image]
LECTURES
Unity:
- Order and organisation
- Working together to reinforce a message
- Proximity/ Alignment/ Repetition can be used to achieve unity but balance them with variety or contrast
Harmony:
- Combining related elements (Adjacent colours/ Similar shapes/ Similar textures)
- The elements feel like they belong together
- Best combined with variety or contrast to avoid monotony
Symbol:
- Representation of something
- To convey an information or a whole story
- Pictorial symbols - Vector illustration/ Simplified visual diagram
- Abstract symbols - Representation of a subject but with minimal details
- Arbitrary symbols - No resemblance to the subject represented; Has to be learnt
Word and Image:
- Pair relevant image with the right words
- Related to typography
INSTRUCTIONS
- Exercise 3: One design for each two design principles (Unity/ Harmony/ Symbol/ Word and Image)
- Recap of selected design principles
- Design process:
- idea exploration and
description
- final outcome in PDF and short
rationale
- feedback given by the
lecturer
- reflection on the particular
exercise
Unity:
Harmony:
The way I distinguish harmony from unity is that harmony has less repeated similarities but they still look belong together, usually tied by the colour palette.
Word and image:
The scope of examples for word and Image can be quite wide, ranging from posters to basically anything with typography related to it.
IDEA EXPLORATION & DESCRIPTION
'Unity' and 'Words and image' were chosen to be explored in my designs.
Unity
For my 2nd design concept, I attempted a dictionary style by typing out a term and definition on a photo. The photo was also taken in Sandakan and I tried to capture the warm fuzzy feeling of a cat sunbathing in the morning sunlight. Next, I thought of a term I always come across on the internet which is cat loaf, and it suits what the cat is doing.
FINAL OUTCOME
VISUAL RESEARCH
Unity:
Illustrations that caught my attention because they look united yet not
monotonous. I analysed further and found out that they share the same
colour palette and main characteristics but the artists explored various
shapes, sizes, patterns and facial expressions.

IDEA EXPLORATION & DESCRIPTION
'Unity' and 'Words and image' were chosen to be explored in my designs.
Unity
I picked beetroot as my main subject as it has recognisable
characteristics such as the leaves that pop out and also the
reddish colour. To add some cheekiness in my design, I played with
different facial expressions such as eye shapes, various sizes and
height differences for the beetroot character design.

Words and Image
As I hope to utilise the photographs I have taken before, I designed a
fake photography exhibition poster using one of the photos taken in
Sandakan, Sabah. A blue-ish colour palette is used for the font colour
to complement the photo. The background of the poster is a light grey
textured paper to spice things up a little bit.

FINAL OUTCOME
In the end, I chose 'Unity' and 'Harmony' to be further developed.
Unity
I hoped to use a more saturated colour for the shading as
I planned to do cell-shading method. For example, I chose
a purplish tone for the shadows and an orangish tone for
the highlights, instead of just using dark red and bright
red. The outline that was originally black is now coloured
in dark purple.

Harmony
The shading method in this illustration is the opposite of the
method used in 'Unity', which is in a painterly style. There
is more blending of shadows and highlight with a softer
brush stroke.

FEEDBACK
The typography in words and image has to be improved and also the horizontal lines were not suitable in this situation. For 'harmony', the left part of the drawing is too heavy and imbalanced. So Ms Jinchi suggested drawing a few small creatures in the middle of the ground (more to the right side) to make the composition looks balanced.
REFLECTION
I spent way too much time finding the 'perfect' reference pictures
before starting a sketch for an idea. It is not a good habit as I do
not hope to waste too much time falling into the Pinterest black
hole and get no work done. I should trust myself more that I will
figure it out as I sketch, instead of being too fixated on reference
pictures and thinking of relying entirely on them. Besides, I have
to be very mindful of the available time to work on the drawings as
I got carried away and bite more than I could chew.
