LECTURES
Week 2:
A lecture about composition was given to ensure students have some basic knowledge and direction when doing their collage.
- Introduction to basic composition
- Rules of Thrid
- Golden ratio
- Composition framing and cropping
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Choose and identify your collage's design elements to be cut out and compose it into your own concept & story.
2) Take 3 photos of your collage pre-composition.
PHYSICAL COLLAGE DESIGN
I saw some empty angpaos (red packets) laying around on my table so I
decided to do a collage that represents Chinese heritage. Besides, the
angpaos have a wide variety of pattern designs, shiny textures, and
Chinese proverbs/ Chinese New Year wishings in different calligraphy
fonts that adds to the design variety.

FINAL OUTCOME
In the end, pre-composition #2 was chosen as it has a more attractive composition combined with the choice of angpao cut-outs. I added another small cut-out (the 3 small flowers) under the big Chinese letter which is my surname.

FEEDBACK
Mr Fauzi gave me some advice when I was kind of having some
difficulties composing my collage elements to form a visually pleasing
design. He told me to not feel attached to one design but to create a
few new ideas that are different from each other instead of staying at
one design for too long. This is to keep the creation pace going on and
prevent not making any progress.
REFLECTION
I never realised that doing collage this way is that fun. It also
reminds me of the joy I had as a kid when I was doing anything crafty.
In addition, this exercise is a very enjoyable method to learn the
topic of composition instead of just 100% listening to a lecture and
reading notes from the lecture slides.
