INSTRUCTIONS

  • Observe your surroundings, people, vehicles, buildings, activities etc. Select visuals that are relevant to the place/ surrounding you find interesting to be translated into a design work that reflects your interpretation of a place. Remember to apply design principles in your work.
  • Design process:
          - visual research
          - idea exploration and description
          - final outcome in PDF and short rationale
          - feedback given by the lecturer
          - reflection on the particular exercise

VISUAL RESEARCH

Composition styles and artistic choices on how I can convey the interpretation of the place I will choose into a design.

IDEA EXPLORATION & DESCRIPTION

i) Documentation of my observations
I chose my comfort places -- home and the park that is less than one minute away from my house. Ever since I moved to a new area, the park nearby has always been a place for me to spend some personal time and recharge myself.

ii) Planning of artwork

I went with home as my idea and sketched out a bit to figure out what I hope to present. The food, the smell, the sound of wok clanking and the knife chopping onions etc.

However, I changed my mind and went with the park instead. I roughly sketched out two orientations, landscape and portrait to see which suits better. The reason I did not use a scanner to scan the sketches is that my scanner creates a very harsh outline in return for a non-shadowy image, I do not think it was worth it.

iii) Line art Stage
Imported the sketch to do a digitalisation of the line art because I want to have more freedom to explore during my colouring and shading phase. I plan to print a few copies of the line art so I can experiment with different mediums on it without worrying about ruining the only one original copy. There are 2 versions, one being the panels are in the foreground, the other one being in the background.

iv) Colouring stage
Chose the first version, lowered the opacity to 30% and coloured the outline. This allows me to blend more easily compared to a greyish colour

- Colour pencils
After that, I printed one copy and did colouring using the good ol' colour pencils. The style I went for is to play with complementary colours (Green is opposite to purple). I used monotonous colours for the background whereas vibrant colours are used for the subjects in the panels.

Then, I started to get overwhelmed by hesitation, so I figured out it is time to transfer back to digital to work on certain areas like the sky and some touch-ups.

I made two versions for the panels, one is just a white blank space, the other is filled with patterns to convey a fun, light-hearted feeling I always get when I am at the park.

- Ink brush pen
This is to fulfil my own wants of using my forgotten brush pens. Just to have some fun and see how it goes.

v) Feedback development
Ms Jinchi suggested going with the ink coloured version but introduce colours to certain focal points. However, when I take a look at it, the combination of B&W with coloured version in my artwork looks incomplete. Thus, I decided to colour everything while still making sure that there is a big difference between what is the focal point and what is not.

FINAL OUTCOME

Sense of Place
I was 11-year-old when I moved to my current neighbourhood area and since it was newly developed at that time, I watched this neighbourhood park grew. It grew from a lifeless, just grass and empty paths, to full of park equipment, flowers and mini sustainable farm built by the community. Despite enjoying my personal time, I actually like listening to the children's laughter and the sight of uncles and aunties who come regularly for almost a decade. I am more into people watching so I like keeping my distance with them but I do enjoy their presence in the park. Oh, I almost forget to mention about the sky and the clouds, they make a beautiful live image, ever-changing.

FEEDBACK

Week 11
The coloured versions are a bit too light. The ink version is better because it has more contrast. You can add in some colours for variation such as infusing the background with sky blue, and certain focal points with colours, e.g. the frog, some of the flowers and the puppy.

REFLECTION

It was fun connecting the bridge between traditional and digital art for this artwork. I was doing both back and forth depending on the situation but my main focus was still on traditional since it still gives the most rawness especially when I hope to convey a feeling I have towards a place. That feeling did not convey much for my previous self-portrait artwork as that was done completely on digital, and I was kind of upset about it. Overall, I appreciated this opportunity for me to realise how many years of attachment I have towards this park, or more precisely, this space. Whenever I get burned out from assignment this would be my go-to place to clear my mind and pick myself up again. It is my safe space.
