LECTURES
Purpose of research:
- identify social, cultural and political sphere where the design elements reside
- understand the significance of the graphics in its
- cultural studies
- philosophy
- sociology
- origin history
Breakdown and expansion through the design system:

School Emblems [Guest lecturer - Mr Vinod]
A comprehensive article regarding his redesign process can be found on KreatifBeats.com
School emblems are commonly differentiated by the use of tinctures with 5 colours, two metals and two furs
Rule of Tincture: "to never put a colour on colour or a metal on a metal"
- ensures good contrast
- ensures good legibility from a distance

TASK
Project 1: Proposal
i) PLANNING
Everyone brainstormed ideas that they are interested in and updated them on Miro
We had a tough time shortlisting ideas because
we all like every single thing. In the end, we tried to combine 2
ideas into 1 and shortlisted the following topics. We delegated
the tasks according to pairs so 2 members would be working on a
topic.
ii) DRAFT
1st Draft
Proposal draft to get feedback on which specific topic to progress
We progressed with the samurai mask and
discussed the possible executions. These are a few common
ideas, mostly on customising the samurai masks and making an AR
filter
Feedback from the presentation: It felt like as if we are just
literally pasting our ideas on an execution, there is a missing
bridge in between that makes the design thoughtful. The visuals
are also a bit basic and we are advised to keep in mind the
keyword 'exclusive'. We then revised the visual outcome as well
as the possible execution. There were many suggestions but the ones we finalised is an art installation.

FINAL SUBMISSION
Final Project: Final Outcome
i) PLANNING
We had a change in the final execution on the art installation board and discussed the progress on Miro. There are two paths that we can choose depending on if we hope to focus on forms or shadow play.
I sketched out a diagram of how the installation board could work if we were to keep the concept of interactivity and versatility in mind.
When gathering materials, we encountered these few concerns.
Problem 1:
The acrylic sheet might be too dense, reducing the magnetic field between the metal sheet and the magnet
Solution:
Replace it with 0.5mm PVC sheet
Problem 2:
Some types of magnets are not strong enough to withstand weight especially if there is a piece of PVC sheet in between (Cobalt black magnets are weak, the silvery magnets are strong)
Solution:
Replace the 4mm modelling board with 2mm modelling board to reduce the weight of each asset, as well as buying the right magnets
Materials were bought early as I had a really bad experience in a previous group project where members only sourced materials at the last minute and ended up not buying them as the stock ran out. So, I would rather buy them early myself than not have the materials when the group needs them. The unused materials are not wasted as I can re-sell them to my fellow architecture friends.
ii) EXECUTION
Designing assets in adobe Illustrator according to true measurements. Below is the compilation of everyone's assets. Each of us designed around 3 elements.
All of us were looking at the possibilities of arranging the assets while making sure there is an order. It was quite impossible to have all varieties of assets while wanting to stay consistent. Besides, we could not just blatantly remove a few assets just for the sake of removing them. In the end, we decided that the users do not have to use all of the assets shown, they can just pick the ones they want to showcase on the board and arrange them.
After changing the stroke settings of the assets into the right ones for the laser cutting process, we then brought our files to Taylor's Makerspace and learned to operate the laser cutting machine from Mr Hock, who immensely helped us during the execution process by giving useful advice. We helped with the measurements and screwing work whereas Mr Hock helped with any muscle tasks.
Even though the burn marks can be turned into a narrative whereby it is like samurai armour that has been on a battlefield, we still decided to spraypaint it for a more refined look. There is plastic content in the modelling board which caused an oily melted feel on the surface when it was burnt by the laser cutting process, so I had to wipe the surface of all the assets with alcohol before taking them to be spraypainted by the group.
We then proceeded to the Augmented Reality execution, for which I have to give huge credit to the rest of my groupmates as they are mostly in charge of this stage. We started by changing the assets to 3D in Illustrator but we switched to doing it in Adobe Dimensions as there was a limited choice of material. We settled for the metallic feel we got and moved on to animating in Adobe Aero with lots of trials and errors.

FEEDBACK
Week 4
Week 2
Week 4
- translation of ideas to an execution has to improve, for now, it feels like just copying and pasting each idea on a type of outcome
- think of something iconic and exclusive
- the narrative is good but visual design has to improve, take the essence of kabuto and create a new visual idea, not re-design something that ended up looking 100% identical like a kabuto
Week 2
- Interesting POV
on this topic, using visual for intimidation + status
- Consider
exploring this from the perspective of war-like appearance, prestige as
aesthetics for current time
REFLECTION
I am a lot more detailed when planning the backbone of the project this time. The reason for it is firstly, this is a group project, and any action does affect other group members. Secondly, we agreed on executing an outcome with quite a high workload (but definitely doable). Based on my previous semester's group project in SIP which was quite large-scale, I understand the importance of having things planned out early and that there is no such thing as progressing 'too early', there is only being on track or falling behind. It was productively fun coordinating the team, collaborating with Taylor's Makerspace, and bringing the materials for everyone to work on the project together, because I can see that everyone enjoyed building it together and most importantly, everyone is present in each and every group discussion. Their positive reaction towards each progress gave me the trust to continue leading the project and the group.
That being said, I am grateful that my fellow group members are able to follow the working pace we all discussed and planned during group meetings. I could trust them with their delegated task and that makes working on this project memorable along with the study trip we had in Tokyo. It is an expensive assignment indeed haha, but the experiences gained are undoubtedly worth it.
