Task 3B: Type Design & Communication

i. RESEARCH
Expanding my visual library on lettering designs ranging from different art styles.

Decided on the Hungry Ghost Festival because it is always fun working with something that is deemed scary. Besides, it is a great opportunity for me to learn more about this Chinese traditional culture.

ii. SKETCH

I have concluded a few keywords to keep in mind: Geometric borders, squares, ghost money/ joss paper, incense stick, and smoke.

iii. DIGITALISATION
Proceeded with the idea from #5

After feedback, I added tonality and more smoke effects. I had to pay attention to not create awkward tangents between the smoke lines and the alphabets. The flat colour shading was done using the divide function in the pathfinder. Very handy.

iv. STICKER TRY-OUTS

It was a back-and-forth process of identifying and solving problems I did not know could happen.

I have decided on using a white background for my sticker.

After this one, I rounded the white background for the right corners.

FEEDBACK

Week 13
General feedback
- Looks good, I am okay with it!
Specific feedback
- Round off the white background edges on the right side.

Week 12
General feedback
- The colour is too plain, add tonality to it.
Specific feedback
- Add more smoke lines by drawing white lines over the black patch.

Week 11
General feedback
- Okay
Specific feedback
The style for 3rd sketch looks ghostly, but the tongue is not working. - The background stamp for 2nd one might not make it a good sticker. - For the 5th one, the joss sticks are a good idea but make it skinny and minimal, the lettering follows the 3rd one.

REFLECTION

Experience
I felt quite a bit of a sense of achievement seeing my own creation in a digital sticker that can be shared on Telegram. Besides, this project was very fun for me, maybe because I got lucky with my creative juice and kind of nailed the design I wanted and got it accepted with minor changes required. I also think that being aware of the tools such as 'Effects' and 'Pathfinder' and making a design that can be aided by these tools are the reason why I enjoyed this task.

Observations
I am definitely much more productive when I get to have sufficient time to make changes right after I got my feedback in class. Sometimes I might feel a bit pressured because it seems like a limited time but as soon as I start doing the task in the classroom, I tend to finish it faster compared to when I am at my house.

Findings
Now I do not see stickers on Whatsapp and Telegram as just 'this looks pretty' but I would take notice of how the lettering in them works, what are the graphical elements in it and how the colour stands out. I found out that what makes some stickers very satisfying to look at is how the lettering wraps around each other and they all form the sticker as a whole. There is a bubbly/ fluidity in it. Overall, task 3B is another task that makes me go: "Oh, things are actually not as complicated as it seems, " It is easy to feel overwhelmed when we have not tried something but that does not mean it is not achievable.

FURTHER READING

Fig 6.1 'The Vignelli Canon' by Massimo Vignelli, 21 June 2022

The author brings our attention to the technicalities of design through the intangibles aspects. It is a refreshing way for me to look at the techniques of design, the aspects mentioned are the following but the one I am interested in the most is appropriateness.

Fig 6.2 Intangibles aspects that are covered in the book, 21 June 2022

A good design also depends on its appropriateness at a given time, given context. What works in one situation might not work in another. Things we should consider are the expression, colour, texture and what the client needs. It is more of tailoring your design to suit and solve a condition rather than following strict rules, as it is important to listen to the wants too.
