TASK

Week 1
Watch stop motion shorts
- Choose 3 stop motion shorts and explain the reason for choosing them

Stop motion #1

Fig 2.1 Animation by Anisotrophic on Youtube, 30 August 2022

I was surprised to see stop motion animation using the game 'Minecraft' because I would have never expected that to be possible. My first thought is the creator built everything and screenshotted the view, arranging the images afterwards. However, the creator mentioned the physics animation was made in Blender and only imported into Minecraft using a third-party program 'Namepointer'. It is pretty interesting to know that programs like this exist and the creative possibilities created by technology.

Stop motion #2

Needle-felted wool stop motion animation will never not be satisfying to watch. Not only do the miniatures have a cute and cosy look to them, but the creator's craftsmanship in making such small-scale assets is very impressive. The patience in creating both the assets and the animation is commendable. I also appreciate the meticulous details in mimicking how real food would have interacted if we cut them.

Stop motion #3

The combination of using real food and lego caught my attention because of the contrast in the texture between a rough surface (real food) and a shiny, plastic surface (lego). The transition between these two was also smooth and satisfying to watch. My favourite part was when the jam is spread on the bread. Not to mention, the sound effects are not overdone, unlike some ASMR videos. The lighting in the video is also consistent and bright enough for my own liking.

Final Project - Stop Motion

i) STOP MOTION PROPOSAL

Plot-planning and collecting visual references to save time during the actual shoot by having a clear direction.

ii) BEHIND THE SCENES
Tapes on the camera screen to mimic the 16:9 aspect ratio guideline as my camera does not have the setting and legos all over the floor.

iii) EDIT PROGRESS
After combining 380+ images and trimming/duplicating certain frames, I begin working on incorporating sound effects to show a stronger impact on some actions as it was too subtle.

I've also typed out the slogan in Photoshop and exported it as PNG to be shown towards the end of the stop-motion video.

FEEDBACK

Week 13
Nice composition, please add sound effects!

REFLECTION

It is systematic that students are briefed and given guidance to prepare for the final project on the first day of class. Getting visual references on how stop motion animation in the early start would save time in forming my own ideas afterwards.

I remember attempting my first stop motion when I was like 10 years old? But I'm pretty sure it is not complete and I only took a few shots, getting excited by just replaying a few continuous movements. I felt like a kid again when doing stop motion for this assignment as I get to revive my interest in playing with legos while being involved in a more professional shooting process by going through the pre-production phase to the post-production phase. I learned so much by being attentive to the details throughout the shooting and learned lessons, such as being passionate and patient are the key to successful work. These are not just to score good grades but as individuals who create, it is important to have a sense of pride in your own creation, because or else what is the point of having good-looking work but not feeling attached to it?
