TASK

Shooting Exercise: Framing
During practical session, we are split into two per group to carry out our shooting exercise. The following video perfectly depicts how Trinity waits for people, and also how she perfectly folds her sweater with extreme professionalism.

i. Editing progress
Instead of just importing the 5-sec video clips continuously, I decided to vary the sequence of the shots to minimise the feeling of awkwardness and also to inject some sense of liveliness. It might still be jarring since I did not shoot the videos with that idea in my mind, I only decided to do that in the editing process.

Project 2: Editing Exercise 1 (Lalin)
We were required to do trimming exercises in this shooting made by Taylorians for a part in Lalin.

i. Editing progress
There was a storyboard provided for us to figure out the sequence of the video but there was also graphics provided that are not mentioned in it. Thus, I tried to arrange them in a way it makes sense to me. Also, we are required to trim it to 30 seconds sharp and I found it hard to still ensure the video makes sense in such a short time.

Project 2: Short MV

30 secs music video shooting, 3 students in a team. Our chosen choreography is from a TikTok dance which led to us choosing 'Jiggle Jiggle' by Jason Derulo X Duke & Jones X Louis Theroux X Amelia Dimz. It is a brilliant choice because I am not someone with an energetic facial expression, so we can align our mv art direction with something laidback and chill.

i. Storyboarding

My team managed to figure out the flow of the video and the shots we need in a discussion within an hour. A storyboard is needed to ensure the shooting phase is efficient and we timed the shots according to the length of our chosen song too.

ii. Shooting
I am eternally grateful that our shooting location is deserted and only 2 security guards appeared for a few minutes. We were also lucky that the weather is cooling on that day as our dress code is hoodies.

iii. Editing (First Draft)
Disaster, disaster, disaster. The video clips look beautiful on the phone but when imported into my premier pro, it looks off. If I export through the normal high-bitrate presets (or others that are not 'match sequence preview settings'), it automatically becomes overexposed as such. My teammates are having the same problem too.

I hope to be glowing in within metaphorically but not physically and literally, especially when I initially expected a smooth sail in exporting the video.

On a good note, the clips fit in the timeframe of our chosen song perfectly and not much trimming is needed.

In the end, I tried to google for solutions that would work on my device and this is not the perfect one but at least still acceptable.

iv. (First draft) MV
Turn on the subtitles for the labels of shots.

v. Colour correction
Made minor basic corrections, mostly on removing a greenish tint and neutralising it, as well as increasing contrast to make things look slightly less 'ashy'.

Project 2: Production Shoot

Remake scenes from Happiness (2021) a South Korean television series.

i.  Location planning

ii. Editing raw footage
Trimming the video clips and syncing the audio to them. The task was delegated among group members and I was in charge of shot 1 to 4.

iii. Colour Correction

iv. Final Production Shoot Video
Background ambience noise has been set to around -20 dB but I decided to add music in the end and remove the ambience audio for most of the video clips.

FEEDBACK

Week 4

Well done, the art direction is there. Now can move on to the colour correction for the MV shoot.

REFLECTION

The efficiency of my group in completing the MV shoot is really great as we utilised the time given in the tutorial session to draft our storyboard and quickly agreed on a shooting date. There were no problems during the day of the shoot itself as everyone was well-prepared with the tripods and props. I have learnt that being flexible on the day of the shoot by adapting the shooting brief to the actual situation is crucial to keep the workflow going continuously.

For the production shoot, unfortunately I did not get much hands-on experience as I got Covid and had to self-quarantine. However, before the shoot happened, I ensured to plan the location well and discuss the outfit with the directors and the art directors as well as making sure everyone understands their position. I only managed to help out with organising the shooting brief and some editing in the post-production stage but it was fun looking at a few behind the scene videos shared in the team's WhatsApp group.
