Task 2A: Key Artwork
i. VISUAL RESEARCH
To see how can letters interweave each other to create a unique
monogram.
Then, I started finding objects/visuals around me that I find
aesthetic or that make me happy when looking at them. I found
kinetic sculptures, I like how they connect with each other and
have different shapes that complement each other.

ii. SKETCHES
I decided to choose my initials LQY to be developed into a
design. My first concept has a thinner stroke, like a wind chime.
I decided to further explore idea #4.
Fig 2.5 First concept sketches, 20 September 2022
Fig 2.6 Exploration of idea #4, 20 September 2022
My second concept focuses more on a chunky look, mostly
made out of semi-circles. I chose idea #1 to be developed
because the other 2 designs lack a sense of cohesiveness no
matter how I tried to arrange them.

iii. DIGITALISATION

iv. SKETCHES- 2ND ATTEMPT
After the first round of feedback, I realised that my mark did not reflect my identity or what I do. I know that I like doing fantasy character art. Thus, for idea #1-#2 my
letter 'Q' is sitting on a throne with an 'L' shape and holding a fork
weapon in the shape of 'Y'. The 2 designs are more chunky, so
for idea #3- #6 I explored more fluid shapes and it became a
character with a tail, holding a weapon, like an evil
witch.

v. DIGITALISATION- 2ND ATTEMPT
Chose idea #5 and #6 to digitalise.

After feedback, I was suggested to explore different styles while keeping the
concept and silhouette of the logo. I call the first one
wrinkled hash brown. The second design is just me playing with
segments of geometric shapes.

Decided to go with the third idea (initial one), and further
refined the small details of it to make it look less
hand-drawn.

ANIMATION
i) 1ST ATTEMPT
Mostly just to animate the sequence of the
main parts of my mark appearing.
Fig 3.6 (Progress) first attempt at
animating, 20 October 2022

October 2022
ii) 2ND ATTEMPT
Refined the stomping motion of the fork
(instead of popping out in the middle of
nowhere) and added VFX for the action. I also
changed the colours of the eyes.

MOCK-UPS
i) ITEMS
Chose beanie, card
holders, button badges and pen drive.

ii) INSTAGRAM POSTS
Explored
different poster designs using elements
related to my mark. It is important for me
to showcase the 'ghost' in my mark as a
character/ mascot since I am all about designing fantasy characters. After a round of
feedback, I switched one of the posts to a
self-portrait photo with my mark.

layout, 20 October 2022
We are required to take a
self-portrait photo and incorporate
our mark into the photo. I was
exploring whether or not I should put
my full name on the photo but I
decided that the photo should be
simplistic and the focus should be on
the mark itself. The photo is
suggested to be in a monochrome
colour.

FEEDBACK
Week 10
General feedback
- Contemplate if the idea is challenging enough or not while considering the deadline and your own ability
- The more u continue, u might learn new things/forms/shapes that can be introduced to the character form
Specific feedback- The detail in the tail of 't' is a nice touch
- Top section of 'G' might look a bit too elongated, which can be solved by just shortening it, allowing the below section to look wider, but doesn't mean that the top stroke needs to be the same as the bottom G cross bar although generally, it is.
- Adjust the top of the 'T' to be smaller and conventionally, it should be thinner.
Week 9
General feedback
- Be careful with graphical elements expanded from the mark,
a sufficient amount would attract audiences whereas if it's
too much it will suck in the attention to your mark.
Specific feedback
- Fairly well-expanded in terms
of the mark and identity
- Overall, fairly good in terms
of item presentation
Week 7
General feedback
- The mark does align with the rationale of what I
do
Specific feedback
- Maintain the big shape of it but try to explore different
variations of styles and play with "what if..?"
Week 6
General feedback
- Choose only one thing that can represent your identity, who
you are, or what you do
Specific feedback
- Optimise your design in a shape of a square, as a basis for
proportionality
- A stable design tends to be symmetrical, simplistic and
communicates clearly
REFLECTION
Experience
I honestly am a bit stressed out during this task as I seemed to not
understand the beauty standard for a workable mark and visual design
overall. Typography is not up my alley but still, I feel satisfied with
the amount of effort I have put into each progress check. Besides, I am
actually quite proud and happy to have a mark that represents my identity
even though it is definitely not perfect but it is a start. I do plan to
revisit it one day and polish the mark when I am equipped with better
knowledge in design.
Observations
It became apparent to me that I frequently zone out easily or get
mentally drained quickly during classes in these few weeks, especially
after I got covid during the first week of this task. Forcing myself to
be busy with my hands and constantly browsing the useful links given by
Mr Vinod during the class are able to help me regain my concentration.
It also reduced my thoughts on procrastinating my work.
Findings
If I were to reflect on myself, I noticed that I did not understand the
objective/ requirements of the task effectively which leads to the need of making major changes after each feedback session. This then causes frustration
on my side but when I think of it, I lack discussions with my peers on
getting feedback for my early progress. Besides, I should expand on the
platforms which I get design inspiration from. Pinterest should not be the
only place to get visual images but other design blogs should be explored
too to understand the latest trends in the design industry or informative
personal articles written by designers. What I am trying to say is I could
benefit from shifting my focus from "just find relevant visuals for the
task" to genuinely being curious about different aspects of typography
because that would build up my knowledge and aid my thought process in
designing.
FURTHER READING
Fig 5.1 "Identify; Basic Principles of Identity Design in the Iconic Trademarks
of Chermayeff and Geismar"by Tom Geismar, 18 October 2022
The book provides references to corporate design identity and the
justification behind each meaning of the trademark. However, it lacks
information on the creation process of the design itself. Appropriate,
simple and memorable are three criteria used by Chermayeff and Geismar
in judging what creates a good trademark. A trademark has to focus on a
single "story" that is uncomplicated in form. Simple, but distinctive
enough to be remembered. It also should be flexible so it can be used in
a wide range of sizes and media such as posters, business cards or in a
digital realm like a website browser icon.
Below is the
trademark for Shinsagae, a Korean department store chain. The trademark
is designed in a way it can be used as an element to beautify its
shopping bags, wrapping papers and stores. There is a good lesson in its
versatility in application.
