ITINERARY

The following itinerary gives a brief idea of the trip's schedule and the area for compulsory exploration during the mornings.

LOCATIONS THAT PIQUED MY INTEREST

Nakamise-dori Street

Fig 1.2 Sensoji temple, 1 March 2023

A shopping street connecting the main gate of Sensoji Temple & the main hall. We managed to find a variety of commercialised products with samurai armour designs ranging from bookmarks to figurines. (Detailed findings can be found in 'Compilation' blog)

There are a few stores selling aesthetic traditional paintings or Japanese fans, too bad I am not financially independent enough to afford them :(

Fig 1.4 Reptiles, 1 March 2023

A commotion was caused as the owners of the reptiles drew too much attention and caused a crowd to hog up the main lane, they were warned by two police officers. What can I say, the bearded dragons are cute.

Odawara Castle

Fig 1.5 Chaos, 1 March 2023

We planned the trip to Odawara and took the bullet train (as well as getting lost a few times mid-way) as there are some samurai artefacts that can be found there (most are located in Osaka too bad). We split into 2 groups, 3 members per group to spread out and collect data. I did not have any data network on my phone as the sim card failed, and guess who is still dumb enough to walk somewhere alone? Me. To be fair, Trinity and Sheryl were just on the third floor of the castle and I was only going to the fourth floor, I absolutely did not think that I would have trouble finding them as they are just right below me. I was wrong. Anyways, after much panic, we found each other again and I am on the verge of breaking down as you can see in the picture, but we all laughed it off as the other group had a huge difficulty too (it is another long story).

teamLab Planets Tokyo

Love the stuff here. It actually made me realise the importance of knowing how to code, as well as making an art installation easy to understand so that the public can have fun interacting with it. Simple and eye-catching. I then found their website which was informative to look through as I got interested in other works produced previously. I have always been curious about physical art installation work so this location was an eye-opening experience on how art installations can cater to a large crowd at a time.

Mori Art Museum

It is also another fun location for me as I am intrigued by the variety of artwork produced by different artists. Not only that, some have their design process shown from the start to the end which I can take as a learning process. The type of outcome from each artist is very different and unique from each other, showing the creativity of art executions.

REFLECTION

Honestly, I am very happy to be in a group where everyone is crazy enough to travel far/ go all-out in getting data for our topic. Especially in Odawara Castle where we were literally running up hills and stairs since the museum is closing and we were late due to being lost in direction. The sense of dedication everyone has fueled my energy to give my best effort in whatever can benefit the group project. Since the locations we visited are quite big and it would be time-consuming to collect data as one big group, we separated to cover more areas in a limited time. We did get fruitful findings by doing so as everyone has a good observation towards what we need for data collection.

Overall, the trip has taught me that planning is really crucial and not to underestimate the travelling time from one location to another, especially if I am not good with directions and have language barriers. I really should have put more time into learning how different stations and train lines in Tokyo work. Other than that, visiting Japan has really shown me the aesthetic aspect of Tokyo ranging from its city planning and architecture to its traditional and contemporary art culture.
