TASK

Week 6

2D turnaround sketch anatomy correction
#1 is the initial sketch, #2 is the improved sketch. Fixed the hand and tried to taper the thigh and calf more, but the difference made may not be obvious enough even though I tried my best to look at references and tweak it according to my character's body type.

Initial 3D blockout
Trying to gauge the proportion of my character and further familiarise myself with building shapes using Zbrush.

Week 7
Base model + Clothed model

It was slightly challenging but I still managed to make sense of the placement for each body part. I got into a dilemma in this stage which is either following exactly the character's proportion based on the 2D sketch or exaggerating it more in a stylized way. I could not decide on one and ended up making the model looks too squashed horizontally. Sculpting hands and fingers intimidated me as well but I learned to take it step-by-step. The improvement is made in Week 8's progress as I decided on following the original 2D sketch.

Week 8
Revised proportion

Honestly, the overall proportion can change drastically by just tweaking the size of the head. I could have set the 2d turnaround reference picture as a background in Zbrush to gauge the placement of limbs faster (lesson learned).

FEEDBACK

Week 8
- Landmark the clothing more and further improvements for detailings can be done during Project 2

Week 7
- The model looks too squashed, improve it by looking back to the reference pic

Week 6
- Fix the hand anatomy, it should turn to the side more as well as drop the thumb more
- Taper the thigh and calf more

REFLECTION

I managed to have a better grasp of using Zbrush after completing the project. A lot of potential functions were shown by Mr Kanaan during class that enabled me to be more flexible and think of alternative solutions to technical problems that occur. Besides, the project has taught me to have a better eye for details when observing the gesture of body anatomy and translating them into the 3D model itself. The last and most important lesson learned is to build up the muscle memory of pressing quicksave to prevent any tear-inducing, hair-pulling situations from happening.
