TASK

Infographic poster

i) RESEARCH
Students are required to make an infographic based on any recipes from Pasta Grannies' Youtube channel. I watched a few videos and listed down the number of ingredients as well as the cooking process. This is to gauge how many vector assets I have to create as well as the animation skills required when doing the animated infographic.

I ended up choosing apple strudel as the food itself has sentimental value to me. Besides, Helena's recipe is simple to follow and I have plenty of visual ideas popping out in my brain while watching her baking process.

ii) PLANNING
Typed the steps in making the apple strudel as well as the measurements/timing and more specific actions.

iii) DIGITAL ASSETS

Moodboard of the art direction for the poster. I took reference of the colours and patterns found on the dress worn by the grannie making the apple strudel.

Digitalised assets come in handy and make work faster as I animate more scenes that could use similar shapes.

iv) DRAFT
First draft for work in progress. Mr Hafiz reminded me the importance of utilising the negative space as the icons are too small which can get overpowered by the background.

Animated infographic

i) PROCESS
Separating each asset into different layers on adobe Illustrator and ended up with 6 ai files as I am worried that my laptop could not handle After Effects processing too many layers at once.

Fig 4.1 Separating layers, 17 February 2023

Mostly applied the animation lesson taught in Week 4 such as exaggerating the motion of an asset as well as applying motion blur.

ii) PROGRESS
I forgot to align the background in the same position for each scene, causing inconsistency in the placement of the background which can be seen in the video below.

Thus, I went back to each file in After Effects to fix it. Then, I added sound effects and background music that suit the visual style of my poster.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
the items may be a little too small and there's a lot of negative space that can be used
- the background is suitable but can be distracting with icons being small
- consider the size of the icons. give it a variety. Some could be slightly bigger with more emphasis

REFLECTION

The assignment brief is a fun one when we are required to base our infographic on recipes in a Youtube channel. Despite most of the videos being around 6 minutes, there are still a lot of effort required in summarising the information and show the important chunks of steps because there is a size limit in our poster as well as a time limit for the length of the video. I also learned to be realistic with the amount of workload I can handle and prioritise consistency throughout the infographic. At certain times, the basics of design principles slipped my mind for example something as simple as utilising the negative space. I was too focused on having enough space between each graphic and overdid the 'breathing' space to a point where things looked scattered. Luckily I managed to make an improvement on that aspect after getting a round of feedback from Mr Hafiz.
